Move over mini bags, big handbags are making a comeback in 2024.

In 2024 size matters, for handbags of course, and large handbags are what we expect to see as one of the main handbag trends of 2024.

Woven handbags, bucket bags, and briefcase bags seem to be the most popular styles based on SS24 runway shows but all of these bags were typically seen in large versions, not mini’s.

While you may think that large bags are only suitable for everyday wear that’s not going to be the case in 2024. Oversized clutches will also be in style for evening wear, making this “big” trend wearable for every occasion.

How Big Are We Talking?

In late November we saw Kim Kardashian wearing a $110,000 crocodile HAC Birkin 50. Not only was this a big fashion statement, it sent a message: there is no such thing as too big when it comes to handbags in 2024.

Let’s be clear, we are not expecting to see everyone running around carrying handbags large enough to rival a carryon suitcase. If you need that kind of space in your life, this is your season to shine. An oversized bag like Kim’s would be a totally acceptable fashion statement, but a Dior tote, or even a Birkin 30 will suffice if that is just too large for you.

A more practical way to participate in this trend is to channel your inner Victoria Beckham and wear a large handbag that is fashionable and manageable.

She’s developed a reputation for wearing larger handbags, particularly Birkins. Her Hermes collection rivals some of the biggest in the world and majority of the bags she is seen with are Birkins size 30-35 .

What Style of Large Handbags Are In For 2024?

If there was one style of handbag that did not make an appearance in SS24 shows it was crossbody bags.

If you’re typically attracted to messenger and crossbody style handbags we recommend choosing ones that have an adjustable shoulder strap or handle so you have the option to wear them on one shoulder or carry them in hand.

Does This Mean Mini Handbags Are Out?

No, S24 runway shows had a mix of both micro and oversized bags. Mini handbags have been on trend since 2017 and we don’t see them going anywhere.

Bags like the Hermes Mini Kelly are still holding strong in resell value and popularity.

We also saw Chanel fans obsess over the Chanel Nano Shopper late this year. The mini version of this bag was also highly sought after.

Both styles of the Chanel bag are selling for over retail on the second hand market. With the Mini Nano Shopper measuring in at under 5”, it’s safe to say that we are still obsessing over bags that fit nothing but a Tic Tac and our hopes and dreams.
