Are Concealer Lips Making A Comeback?

FTF - From The Feed

Is it this a fresh take, or a complete fumble?

This is not a drill, it’s really happening. In the recent TikTok posted by the influential trend setter, Sofia Richie shares her “ombre” lip routine with YSL Candy Glaze and finishes it off with… concealer?

She walks us through her new favorite lip combo and wraps up the tutorial saying “last but not least I’m going to do the cherry on top which is a tiny dot of concealer”. Gasps in Millennial. We understand that fashion trends come back around, but one thing we never expected, seeing concealer lips making it back into the rotation.

The video has seen mixed reviews - some people love the new take on this old trend with comments like “2023 me is so happy with this“ from Saraluvsglitter. Others are less excited, saying things like “Oh nooo. We JUST recovered from our forever dried out lips. Do NOT bring this back” by Jade Caldwell.

While Sofia’s TikTok has also inspired some hilarious reaction videos from creators like Isabel Clancy, our favorite blast-from-the-past 2000s nostalgia creator, we aren’t so quick to write off the rebirth of this trend.

Hear us out.

We’d like to point out, Sofia’s TikTok wasn’t suggesting we start using concealer as our sole lip product when getting ready so put the Rimmel Hide the Blemish Concealer back in your Caboodles make up case please.

But for those of us who are brave enough to revisit doing a full concealer lip, we feel Kyra Nikole shows a great way to make this work in 2023. In our opinion, blending the colors together and adding gloss on top actually works in this video.

The people that are jumping up to hate on this trend seem to be missing the point. It’s a bit of an overreaction to the new take on this resurfacing trend. While people are bringing concealer lips back, they are doing it in new ways that really look nothing like the caked on look from the 2000s - thankfully.

TBH, the looks shown by Sofia Richie and Kyra Nikole don’t even look like concealer was used. If only their lip technique was shown and concealer wasn’t explicitly mentioned we’d bet that the reaction wouldn’t have sparked nearly as much comment controversy.

Do we want to see the OG 2000s concealer lip back in action - absolutely not. Do we approve of the 2023 version of using concealer as a lip option - absolutely.

Admittedly we cringed when hearing about this trend resurfacing but after seeing the new way it’s being approached - we’re honestly not mad at it. Whether you’re using a tiny dot, or jumping in with both feet for a full concealer lip look, if you’re doing it like Sofia Richie and Kyra Nikole, you’re okay in our books.
