Shopping for denim can be so confusing. High rise is out, apparently low rise is too? Skinny jeans left then maybe made a comeback? The information is overwhelmingly contradictory and it makes it difficult to understand what is actually in in denim. Maybe that’s where the no pants trend has stemmed from, people being fed up trying to decode the denim trends.

Listen, if you want to go sans pants, you go girl. But if you plan to wear bottoms at all in 2024, we might be able to help. We reviewed countless blogs, fashion shows, even interviews with denim companies themselves, and we feel pretty confident in our grasp of the upcoming landscape of denim. We share both the trends we love, and ones we don’t quite agree with.

At the end of the day if you only take one thing from this article make it be this. You won’t look stylish if you don’t feel stylish. Don’t buy clothing just because us, or anyone else, says it’s in style. Gather information, try stuff on, and only buy something because you feel great in it.

High Or Low Where Should Denim Go?

Don’t throw out your high rise jeans just yet. We know that there have been lots of TikTok’s and blogs that are telling us high rise jeans are out, luckily for us that’s just not true. 2024 will be inclusive of all rises of jeans - high, mid and low are all on the table for in-style denim rises.

Before you start unpacking your donations pile and hanging your high waisted denim back in the closet hear us out - fit matters. While high rise jeans are going to be a staple in 2024, they are not suited with all cuts of denim that are in style.

The great thing about seeing all rises of denim in 2024 is that there is something for everyone, and every body type. There is literally no excuse to not look cute in denim in 2024 - there are so many options to choose from!

The Washes To Look for In 2024

Grey-Black Denim: Prada, Indigo Denim: AGOLDE, Metallic Denim: Cinq à Sept

There are no washes that are a big “no” for 2024 but there are definitely some that are a big “yes” for us.

Our two favorite washes for the upcoming year are grey-black denim and dark solid indigo. The grey-black look is edgy and great when paired with wider cut, low rise jeans. Indigo denim is so chic and our go to color for dressing up denim. It would still look great on a wider denim but our favorite way to wear indigo denim is as a straight cut high rise, or flare jean.

Metallic jeans are also apparently going to be a trend for 2024. Listen, we’ll always provide you with honest information of what we’re seeing in the fashion industry - even if we aren’t into it. And we 100% are not into metallic jeans, sorry. If they are the hottest thing in 2024 then that’s great, for everyone else. We think metallic denim is really difficult to style and can easily go from chic to cheap if done wrong. We’ll sit this one out.

Denim Cuts to Love & Leave

Straight Leg Denim: Zara, Wide Leg Denim: The Row,
Dad Denim: Levi’s, Flare Denim: FRAME

Straight Leg Denim

We saw straight leg denim pretty much own 2023 and it’s going to continue it’s reign well into 2024. It’s the perfect fit for those who are suffering from skinny jean withdrawal but aren’t quite ready to jump into a jumbo baggy pair of low rise denim. A straight leg pair of denim is a wardrobe must have in 2024. They can be dressed up or down and basically go with everything. Straight leg denim will look great in low, mid or high rise.

Wide Leg Denim

Wide leg denim, like straight leg cuts, are not slowing down in popularity. This cut is best worn with a mid or low rise waistline. High rise is not welcome here. When styled correctly they can give an effortless chic look. Like Dad denim, they are meant to be worn casually, however with the right top, heels and occasion they could be styled to give an edgy, dressed-up look. We’re talking dinner out in Miami vibes - not holiday party at the office.

Dad Denim

Move over Mom jeans it’s time for… Dad denim? Yes you heard that right. With a higher rise than boyfriend jeans, and wider cut than Mom jeans, Dad denim is the ‘family favorite’ denim choice for 2024. The characteristics of Dad denim are high rise, and are somewhere between a straight leg cut and wide leg denim. These are definitely a comfy, casual denim option. They are also another high rise in the family for 2024.

Flare Denim

Fashion really does come full circle as flared jeans continue to make their comeback. A high rise pair of flared denim is going to be one of the looks we see all over social media in 2024.

Horseshoe Denim

Horseshoe Denim: Citizens of Humanity

Have you actually seen these? Sure if you Google it they exist, but have you seen a human in real life wearing these? Cause we haven’t. In our research we’ve seen several blogs and big publications say these are going to be a really hot style for 2024 but we just don’t see it. Maybe we are missing the mark here but we feel that if these jeans gain more popularity in 2024 it will not last and you’ll be left wondering why you bought into this trend. We say skip this one for now.

The Denim Is In the Details

Cargo Denim: Alice & Olivia, Cuff Denim: AGOLDE, Ankle Slit Denim: EB Denim

Rise, wash and cut are not the only things you need to know about for 2024. Even if the rise and cut of your denim is on point, the wrong details can turn your outfit from fire to flop. Here are details we love for 2024 denim.

Cargo

Cargo pants have been a really hot trend, so why not wear cargo denim? The utilitarian look is not only comfortable, it’s stylish. These look best in a low or mid rise with a faded “lived in” or bleached black wash. Chef’s kiss

Cuffs

Not just any cuff, an extra large cuff. Mini cuffs won’t do, in fact those would give you the opposite effect of what we are going for here. The best thing about this detail? It can be achieved with existing denim you already own, if it’s long enough of course. Like a single guy in Miami, it’s also extremely low commitment. In the event you no longer like the look, or it falls out of style you simple roll the cuff down and go get them hemmed.

The one detail we can live without? The ankle slit. I know we used to manually cut these slits in our denim in the 90s but that style belongs there in our opinion. It’s another trend we aren’t even sure is an actual trend - given we have yet to see anyone actually wearing it in public. In the event we are wrong on this one too we just aren’t convinced it would become a staple detail that everyone needs to have in their closet. It’s a no from us dawg.
