Gray Is The New Black

OW3 - On Wednesdays We Wear

Here’s how to wear our favorite neutral of the season.

Earlier this month we covered how to style fall’s hottest color - red. It’s only fair we show some love to this season’s favorite neutral too. The thing we really love about gray is that it’s a really “soft” neutral. What we mean by this is that it tends to wear lighter or darker depending on the color it’s paired with. It creates less contrast than pairing white and black together, but more depth than pairing similar shades like white and cream, or an all black fit.

When we are coming up with our styling options each week, our goal is to suggest quality pieces with a lot of versatility. Gray is a color you can wear all year round so if you chose the rights pieces you’ll be able to get a lot of use out of them. You can also style gray with other trends we have covered the past few weeks like loafers, and striped sweaters. The goal is to build upon your wardrobe with interchangeable pieces. We don’t want you to have a closet full of items that only go with one or two other things. So don’t be surprised if you see past trends we’ve shared pop up again in new ways, it’s intentional.

How To Style → Gray with Light Neutrals

Sweater: Mango, Skirt: Aritzia, Watch: Rolex, Bag: Chanel, Shoes: Manolo Blahnik

The texture of this skirt adds a playful element to the look while still keeping it casual and effortless. It’s one of those grab and go outfits that requires minimal effort to put together but always looks very intentional and well styled.

The finishing touch for this outfit is really the timepiece though. It’s a must have item to help elevate any look. If you’re an avid chronologist then definitely invest in your timepiece. If you wear it more as a jewelry piece then you can take more liberties with watch brands. As long as you’re investing in good materials the movement doesn’t have to be as much of a priority - again unless you’re really into watches.

We intentionally styled this outfit with lighter neutrals to showcase what we were talking about above with how gray takes on the vibe of the neutral it’s paired with. It also creates a softer look than pairing the white and cream tones with black. If we wanted to up the contrast in this look we could swap the bag and shoes for black.

It’s honestly hard to mess up when pairing gray with neutrals. Just remember to use the “sandwich method” to bring the outfit together. Make sure that the neutrals used on top show up somewhere in your bottom so it doesn’t feel disconnected. In this outfit we paired a grey sweater and mule to sandwich the gray tones, and then used a white bag to pull lighter tones up from the skirt.

How To Style → Monochrome Gray

Bodysuit: Aritzia, Jeans: Pistola, Poncho: Eileen Fisher,
Bag: Chanel, Shoes: Prada, Belt: Celine

Dark monochrome outfits are always a great choice. They are a great option if you’re less confident in your ability to style with different colors because you’re just using different shades of the same neutral. Adding no less than 2 and no more than 3 different shades helps to keep the outfit looking interesting. Anyone can put on a matching dress and shoes, add different shades to take your monochrome outfits to the next level.

While the poncho can keep you warm and makes you look chic, this outfit still works without it. We went with black for the the bag, shoes and accessories to help to keep the outfit from being too tonal, especially if you’re not going to opt for the poncho.

We’ve opted for heels in all our looks this week but we chose lower heel heights to make them more manageable for casual wear. If you’re really not about wearing heels unless it’s for an occasion no worries. You can easily swap them out for a boot, or even a sneaker to make this look more casual and easier on the soles.

How To Style → Gray with Other Colors

Top: YSL, Watch: Cartier, Pants: Mango, Bag: Hermes, Shoes: Louboutin

What other color would we pick to style gray with other than red? Since it’s THE pop of color for this fall it’s only fitting that we incorporate it as our pop of color for this outfit.

You could opt for a thicker sweater but we chose a sheer ribbed style because sheer is another trend we’ve seen this fall. This outfit becomes a triple threat by adding in a sheer top, in red, with gray. It incorporates these three trends in a seamless way that’s not overwhelming.

And if you’re going to add a pop of red, there’s really no other shoe you can go for than a Louboutin. Don’t forget their bi-annual sale is coming up in December - we’ll make sure to remind you when the date gets closer 😉.

Other colors that go with gray? Pretty much anything. Pops of color don’t only belong in warmer months, don’t be afraid to play with adding in different colors. Some other popular colors this fall are icy blue, chocolate brown, olive green, soft pastel yellow. Pair darker colors with darker grays and lighter colors with lighter grays to create well balanced looks with a little oomph.
